THE CHALLENGE

Stores, the shop floor and finished goods are usually three separate records, so the stock on the system stops matching the stock on the floor.

THE APPROACH

Excess issue and scrap surface at month-end when nothing can be done about them, batch traceability breaks between the supplier and the finished part, and stock value becomes a number nobody quite trusts. One ledger follows the real flow — goods in, stores, issue to line, work in progress, finished goods, dispatch — carrying receipts, issues, returns, transfers and scrap, bin and location-level counts, cycle counts with variance approval, and reorder levels with shortage alerts.

Traceability runs through all of it: the supplier batch linked to the finished part, heat, lot and shelf-life where they apply, a goods-in to dispatch-note trail, and audit history on every adjustment. Consumption is measured against plan — bill of material versus what was actually issued, excess issue and scrap flagged while it is still fixable, ageing and slow-moving stock, and stock value by category and location.
